Century Series Fighters: Pioneering the Jet Age.
The dawn of the Jet Age brought about a revolution in aviation, and at the forefront of this transformation was the Century Series of fighter aircraft. This groundbreaking collection of aircraft, developed by the United States Air Force in the 1950s, pushed the boundaries of speed, altitude, and technological innovation.
The Need for Speed: Origins of the Century Series:
In the wake of World War II, the United States military recognized the need for advanced fighter jets capable of exceeding the capabilities of their predecessors. The advent of jet propulsion technology opened up new possibilities for aircraft design and performance, and the Century Series was conceived to harness this potential.
The Century Series fighters were characterized by their sleek, aerodynamic designs, powerful jet engines, and cutting-edge technology. They were designed to achieve supersonic speeds, high altitudes, and enhanced maneuverability, making them formidable adversaries in the skies.
Notable Century Series Fighters:
among the most iconic aircraft of the Century Series were the F-100 Super Sabre, F-101 Voodoo, F-102 Delta Dagger, F-104 Starfighter, and F-105 Thunderchief. Each of these aircraft played a significant role in shaping the future of aviation and served as a testament to American ingenuity.

F-100 Super Sabre: The F-100 Super Sabre was the first production aircraft capable of exceeding the speed of sound in level flight. Its swept-wing design and powerful jet engine made it a formidable fighter, and it served with distinction in the Vietnam War.
F-101 Voodoo: The F-101 Voodoo was a supersonic jet fighter designed for long-range interception and nuclear strike missions. Its distinctive long, slender fuselage and powerful engines made it a formidable presence in the skies.
F-102 Delta Dagger: The F-102 Delta Dagger was a supersonic interceptor designed to defend against Soviet bomber attacks. Its delta wing configuration and advanced radar system made it a capable defender of American airspace.
F-104 Starfighter: The F-104 Starfighter was a supersonic interceptor known for its incredible speed and high-altitude capabilities. Its sleek, minimalist design and powerful engine made it a favorite among test pilots and airshow enthusiasts.
F-105 Thunderchief: The F-105 Thunderchief was a supersonic fighter-bomber designed for ground attack missions. Its large payload capacity and powerful engine made it a valuable asset in the Vietnam War.
Beyond the Century Series
The Century Series also included other notable aircraft, such as the F-106 Delta Dart, an advanced interceptor that served as a mainstay of American air defense for decades, and the XF-108 Rapier, an experimental interceptor that, although never put into production, showcased the cutting edge of aviation technology.

Any modeler in th sixties had mostly all of these fighters in his trophy case….
These (century series) are the greatest fighters the US has ever produced. Pfft f-22, f-15, f-4, f-14, they're kid toys comparatively.

My Cousin (once removed) flew the F-105 Thunderchief. He first served in Europe but went on to do 2 tours in Vietnam. He earned 2 Distinguished Flying Cross and 7 Air Medals. He was a little younger than my dad. I only spoke with him about his air force experiences once. He liked the F-105 and related a few stories of his time in Vietnam. He expressed his sadness over losing so many friends. Between combat losses in Vietnam and operational loses throughout his career, he said he had lost over 50 pilot friends. Roger passed a few years ago.
I never understood why they included the 117 as part of the century series
Ahhh yes. Rolling Thunder. And so began the Washington imposed ROE "for political reasons". I was a kid then but knew the absurdity of ROE in war. And how the enemy will gladly take advantage of our crippling ROE. Like putting SAM sites in the "exclusionary areas". Still pisses me off today.
Back in the day. If only we could go back. Imagine nowadays, going from concept and signed contract to a cutting edge boldly designed (at the time) prototype in 12 months LOL. Nowadays layers and layers of government regulation, red tape, and motivation to prolong the development and resultant "cost overruns" ($$$$$$$$) and this could never happen like it did with the 104.
The post war jets came fast and furious. But a lot of what the taxpayers paid for, werent exactly great in terms of value OR the most important factor, the survivability in any conflict
6 hours of aircraft porn 😀
As a kid we saw new fighters every year, and no multi-role jack of all trades either. Now I'm lucky to get see a small handful before I die.
Fantastic Vid as usual.. Wish I was alive back then to witness these!
