The RAF had some great interceptors and bombers.

So sad what happened to TSR2. Perhaps it was inevitable, with spiralling costs, increasing delays, and most importantly, a technology too far ahead of its time. But there was no reason to destroy the whole project, they could have kept the planes and plans ‘on ice’. Something fishy there.
It is clear the technology and role of TSR2 was a direct rival to F1-11. I bet the Americans never openly connected purchasing F1-11 with scrapping TSR2, it would have been hinted at, no more. It’s called deniability, for both sides. But slippery Jenkins and rubbery Healey knew exactly what they were doing.

Actually the vulcans didn't face a sobering defeat during the exercises in America if I remember correctly on two separate occasions a vulcan was able to penetrate the defences and simulate an nuclear attack run on the target or one off? The target cities
The RAF will never be this formidable again, since they don't want "stale white men" good luck with that deiraf!

I was at RAF Binbrook with the Lightnings.
My favourite plane since I saw my first one in 1964.
In 1977 , my first Posting was Binbrook, I was being paid to Play Amongst Something Heroic.
High Concentration and Attention To Detail, I had a Ball.🎉🎉🎉
TSR2's potential is undeniable
I met up today with an ex pilot ,from 5 SQN,now an author , still holds the record from Binbrook to Leuchars , 17 mins .
Everything designed by English Electric struck gold.

All that hard work from the designers, engineers, factory workers, pilots and ground crew and all they wanted was a free, safe, decent place to live.

We were still using the T7 on the Buccaneer squadrons in the 80’s as taxis and local training Aircraft
Now we cant stop rubber dinghies, pay fortunes to house illegal entrants , and can barely afford to house ourselves 😂

The Swedish J-37 Viggen had the same landing gear as the TSR2 and it worked very well. The Saab 37 first flew on 8 February 1967 and was delivered to the air force in 1971. The Saab 37 was developed under a Swedish Labor government and was a very successful aircraft that became the backbone of the Swedish Air Force for 35 years. Development began in 1952 (before the Saab 35 Draken had even completed its first flight) but was delayed until 1961 due to disagreement on the cost increase for the entire project. Curiously, mostly due to the influence of the British politician Duncan Sandys, who declared in 1957 that Britain would not develop any more manned fighter aircraft, but instead focus all development on robots.
Modern day RAF aren't worth anything. Wasting millions training over the English channel for wars they are to afraid to fight.

Luckily in the end britain got a better suited to tactical attack in the Cold War the more flexible platform in the Panavia Tornado.

Government "we need as much control over the project as possible, including huge committees and tiny design considerations". Also government " we are cancelling this project as it has become too expensive". The one thing that is a constant objective reality is that government interference causes overruns and failures. If politicians stayed in their lane, life would be so much better.
