Since the Jan 6 attack on the US Capitol in 2021, some Americans have increasingly insisted that their country is not a democracy, but a republic. What’s the difference? Why is democracy having such a hard time at the moment and would randomly picking members of parliament help?

32 pensiero su “Is the USA a Democracy or a Republic? #finsubito agevolazioni”
  1. I think most all of us can agree that tyranny is bad. However, it is fallacious to assume that democracy is the opposite of tyranny. It's because of oversimplification of concepts where one assumes that because in tyranny the people have no voice, that for the people's voice to govern exclusively must be the antidote.

The United States government was carefully crafted to avoid tyranny. "Democracy" was considered an undesirable form of government due to mob mentally, and how easily people can be riled up about things.

The balance in Congress was that everyone in The House Of Representatives were up for election every two years. The voice of the people could therefore make changes to the entirety of the House Of Representatives according to their whims, the direction of the wind, or whether or not they were grumpy at the time they cast their ballot, etc.

The Senate, on the other hand was not even supposed to be elected by the people directly at all. Each senator was to be elected by every state's legislature. And serve 6-year terms, as a major counterbalance to the House Of Representatives.

People often overlook the fact that the States in The United States are independently sovereign and are NOT simply subordinate subdivisions of a national government.

Each state was to have equal representation in the Senate which balanced against the House Of Representatives.

At the moment, the sovereign states are no longer directly represented in Congress, and while one could argue that this makes things "more democratic" that is not the same as being a superior outcome by any measure.

The checks and balances of the 3 branches are also designed to restrain against tyranny from any one branch.

And the State governments also were supposed to serve as a check and balance with the Federal Government, but that role has been greatly diminished with the advent of directly elected Senators.

It is somewhat universally agreed upon, (it seems) that many issues are more complex than the level most voters seem interested in engaging at, so how is it that we are so certain that expanding the direct power of the people is in their own best interest.

Whoever you voted for in the US election, it seems that all US voters should have ample evidence to agree that if the wrong person is able to rile up enough followers, it could spell doom for everyone… I would like more safeguards against a runaway public majority of mislead people. I believe that is a much greater threat to individual freedom and liberty and more likely to lead to tyranny than anything else being discussed.

  2. While often categorized as a democracy, the United States is more accurately defined as a constitutional federal republic. “Constitutional” refers to the fact that government in the United States is based on a Constitution which is the supreme law of the United States.

  3. America is an Oligarchy maintained by the American Bar Association in legal proxy for the World Bank. How many political offices are held by lawyers? But I am just a crackpot. Don't bother investigating. All the information you need is on the evening news. Don't forget to VOTE! You may even agree with the Electoral College.

  4. "In China you can only vote for candidates which are approved off by the party".
How is that different from the latest Democrat presidential candidate?

  5. USA has a pa liament and gerrymandering affects the electoral college? Okay , so string theory is correct and I live in an alternative universe. Why opine about things you don't understand? Stick to physics because you certainly don't have a clue about this subject.

  6. The year is 2024. The question "Is the USA a Democracy or a Republic?" is no longer valid. America is an oligarchy, with a wanna-be dictator about to take office and become America's last president.

  7. Research: the heritage foundation. 50 year 'long game' to install a radical right wing (fascist) candidate. DONE. Golly gee? Why would extremely wealthy (they call themselves christians, for real) christian oligarchs want to take over the most powerful nation on the planet? My safety feels threatened now at home with the coming of the removal of our constitution and our rights. Oh yes, they absolutely are writing a 'new' U.S. constitution. It is apparent they will have control of our military, the military our tax dollars paid for and use it against us when we protest. Oh and the best part? God will not be coming to help us, as history has shown.

  8. Erm, not sure its accurate to describe the UK as "unitary" any more (3:16). For sure, its not a federal country, but there is such a lot of devolution to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland that does the term "unitary" even apply now?

The devolved nations (Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) have different voting systems from the UK's first past the post system one. Leads to interesting results though – in the UK fptp system, I know who my ONE member of parliament is, and MPs (or, if you like, parties) can be relatively easily hired and fired at an election.
For the Scottish elections (I think its a d'Hondt system), one ends up with "list" MSPs who one generally has no idea about, in addition to "the" MSP who one may have had in mind when voting.

No system is perfect, I guess.

  9. Thanks Sabine

Democracy is one of my favourite political topics.

There are nineteen full democracies. The US isnt one of them. It ranks 26 on the democratic index.

The full democracies do pretty well when it comes to stability, prosperity and general happiness.

    1 Norway 10
    2 Iceland 9.58
    3 Sweden 9.39
    4 New Zealand 9.26
    5 Denmark 9.22
    6 Ireland 9.15
    7 Canada 9.15
    8 Australia 9.09
    9 Finland 9.03
    10 Switzerland 9.03
    11 Netherlands 8.89
    12 Luxembourg 8.81
    13 Germany 8.61
    14 United Kingdom 8.53
    15 Austria 8.42
    16 Mauritius 8.22
    17 Malta 8.15
    18 Uruguay 8.12
    19 Spain 8.08

  10. Using AI to conduct elections is the worst idea I've ever heard. It's an elaborate computer program which its programmer can deliberately design to promote personal agendas.

  11. SABINE, you may be smart but you are not as brilliant as our Founding Fathers. And, please, before you take to insulting those of us in The United States who look to The Constitution and to the wisdom of those who wrote it for our inspiration and hope for the continued success of our nation and the free world, do your homework. We have very good reasons for insisting we are not a democracy and are instead a Democratic Constitutional Republic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZOtEbwwfOM I EXPECT AN APOLOGY FOR THE INSULT, GERMAN.
